USS
Syren by José Barreto
The
USS Syren was built in Philadelphia in 1803 by Benjamin Hutton. The copy
of the original plan done by Hutton himself is kept in the US National
Archives. This boat served during the 1812 War and was also involved in
the Algeciras siege, together with the Argus, the Vixen and the
Constitution, amongst others.
The
siren figure, included in the original plan, was changed after the boat
was captured in 1812, as well as some other elements afore, as can been
seen in the plan on page 185 of the book written by Chapelle.
The
Syren had a 93-feet length between perpendiculars, 27 feet in breadth
and 12 feet 6 inches in draught. It was first launched on August 6th
1803 weighing 250 tons. It served 9 years for the American Army and the
same amount of years for the British Army.
All
the documentation on this boat was obtained from the book "The
History of the American Sailing Navy" written by Howard I Chapelle
and published by the Smithsonian Institution.
- The
model was built at 1:48 scale and there is not kit piece or metal piece,
everything is wooden.
