The 5th Meeting on
Traditional Galician Boats in Combarro (Poio) - 2nd Part
In
this second part we will take a look at the models exhibited at the
special area built by the organisation at the Combarro port, where
stands from different associations could be found as well as a small
sample of naval models, especially traditional boats, some of which were
navigable. This interesting meeting was particularly focused on these
boats.
 Some
members from the "Mar de Vigo" workshop and school performed
live demonstrations of how hulls are carved and how these are later used
to get accurate measurements for the boats built in traditional
shipyards. On the other hand, Antonio, a teacher from the basketmaking
school, manufactured some baskets used to carry fish, as well as fish
traps and tackle that have almost disappeared and that provide any model
with realism when miniaturised.
At
the stand of the Galician Federation for Sea Culture there were
representatives from a sawmill that uses water to transform wood
products and from a small workshop that builds boats in a traditional
fashion.
There
were also examples of other boats, such as the primitive leather boats
and some other traditional ships that can still be found today,
xeiteiras, dornas, and gamelas. The typical mussel beds, so abundant in
the Galician firths, could also be found here.
At
the stand built by the organisation for exhibition models, both static
and radiocontrolled, there were two radiocontrolled dornas (traditional
medium-size boats), with two different navigation systems: the one by Manuel
Delgado, totally controlled by radio and the one by Luis Fernández,
who decided to replace the traditional sail by a main traysail to
improve manoeuvrability.
There
was another model done by a boat's crewmen that could be seen at the
harbour and even though it wasn't of great technical value to us, it had
big sentimental value for its authors. Other models done by Ana Couselo
and Enrique, the promoters of this modelling section in Combarro, could
also be seen.
The
models shown are basically the ones that could be found at the
facilities so we really hope that the number of people involved will
grow in future events so that more people can get to be familiar with
this beautiful and instructive speciality of ship modelling which
focuses on the traditional boats that have disappeared or can still be
found on Galician coasts.
