The Fifth Meeting on Traditional Galician Boats was held in Combarro  (Poio, Spain) First part

combarro19.jpg (57397 bytes)The Fifth Meeting on Traditional Galician Boats was held in Combarro from August 23rd to 26th. More than 25 traditional boats and vessels could be seen, including Catraias from the Portuguese towns of Esposende and Viana do Castelo, gamelas from La Guardia and Corujo, both in Galicia, dornas and bucetas from the southern Galician firths, galleons and lighters (lanchas xeiteiras) from the firth of Mouros, Latin-sail boats from the towns of Ferrol and Ribadeo, fishing boats (traineras) from the Basque Country, Irish currachs and Mediterranean llauts. We could also witness the arrival of three leather boats from Ireland, the Basque Country and Brittany, which are part of the Sant Efflam Project.

combarro33.jpg (32086 bytes)combarro34.jpg (45314 bytes)The crewmembers, more than 80 people, created a brand new and totally different atmosphere in the tourist town of Combarro. Their presence, together with the arrival of several visitors and the organisation of different activities connected to this event reminded us of the importance of our scarce and neglected marine heritage. We really hope that this kind of event helps to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our marine tradition, which is something that many other places in Europe (Douarnenez 2000) seem to be much more concerned about.

Three of the most ancient boats known: the Carocho, the Gamela from La Guardia and the emblematic Dorna.

Departure manoeuvre carried out by a sailing ship; this is a little more complicated than using a motor.

At the same time, and profiting from the fact that this special event was being held, a small exhibition was also organised with several models of traditional boats, some of which were navigable. We will talk about this exhibition in depth in the second part of this article.
